Don't teach only to teach.
Teach to improve the student. To be a teacher requires vigorous discipline on one's own self.

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers

Becoming a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher requires years of practice, study and a rigorous examination of skills. For teachers, the Certification Mark demonstrates a commitment to maintaining the purity, excellence and high standards of Iyengar Yoga. Certified Iyengar Yoga instructors teach the method set forth by B. K. S. Iyengar, maintain a regular personal practice, continue their training with senior teachers, and hold to ethical guidelines.

Every Certified Iyengar Teacher has passed at least two rigorous, standardized assessments. Some have passed many more. The candidate begins the application process after three years study and developing a relationship with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher who agrees to become a mentoring teacher. Then comes two years teaching, exclusively in the Iyengar Method -- all before the actual testing begins.

In the assessment process itself, candidates are tested on anatomy and philosophy, then carefully observed and evaluated as they demonstrate Asanas and Pranayamas, and as they teach a class of students.

Angela Dawn Moore, CIYT and Director of THIY: Compassionate, Dedicated, Energetic

Angela McKinlay photoIyengar Yoga Certification MarkAngela began practicing yoga in 1997 due to an injury and as a means for stress relief. After joining the THIY community in 2004, Angela became a dedicated student of Iyengar Yoga and knew this was the path for her; inspiring her to pursue her Iyengar Yoga Certification. Under the guidance and mentorship of Pat Musburger and Felicity Green, Angela became certified and continues to participate in workshops, classes, and trainings with Laurie Blakeney, Janet McCloud, Nina Pillegi and many more of our amazing Iyengar teachers. She has been teaching at THIY since 2005 and feels strongly about the yoga community that has been built over the 18 years Tree House has been in Shoreline. We are not just a yoga studio, but a place students can feel at home with a yoga family that supports each other;  joins together in friendship, in celebration and during difficult times in our lives;  exemplifying the meaning of yoga or union.

Angela is also a Registered Dietetic Technician and Nutrition Educator with many years’ experience teaching in the public schools, community agencies and public housing sites. She loves children and the joy they bring through their honesty, innocence and eagerness to learn. In addition to her passion and love of teaching yoga, she is also passionate about all things that involve culinary art; especially promoting healthy and tasty cooking habits for life. She loves combining her passion of yoga and nutrition in a way that teaches the healing and life sustaining benefits of both to children and adults, alike.

Angela gets excited about sharing yoga with others because of the many benefits it brings to those who let it become part of their lives. With all the challenges in the world today, yoga can be that positive place we turn to and use what we’ve learned or experienced to help us lead a balanced life.

Laurel Rayburn

image of LaurelLaurel Rayburn first started studying Iyengar yoga in San Francisco in the early 2000s. After moving to the east coast a few years later, she met her teacher, Patricia Walden, and has studied with her ever since. Laurel has studied at the RIMYI center in Pune and also traveled with Patricia to do yoga in Guruji's birthplace village, Bellur, in the district of Karnataka. Laurel considers Jarvis Chen her other primary teacher.

Laurel received her PhD in English literature from Brown University. Writing her dissertation on modern American lyric poetry, she has long been interested in the way that BKS Iyengar's language uses the logic of poetic forms to animate the body. Laurel also teaches both yoga and literature courses in Washington state correctional facilities.

Pat Musburger: Mirthful, Systematic, Watchful

Pat Musburger photo Iyengar Yoga Certification MarkDirector of Tree House Iyengar Yoga from 2003 through 2016, Pat is certified at the Intermediate Junior level, and has been teaching since 1995. Horseback riding brought yoga into her life—to help her stay on the horse while going over jumps. She feels fortunate to have found Iyengar yoga first as it suits her personality and physical needs.

Before moving to Seattle in 2003, she taught at Houston Iyengar Yoga Studio where she studied with George Purvis. Influential senior teachers with whom she has studied include Felicity Green, Joan White, Mary Dunn, and Dean Lerner. Convention classes with Geeta Iyengar greatly deepened her understanding and the opportunity to study with B.K.S. Iyengar during his Light on Life tour had a profound effect upon her commitment to yoga and teaching.  Currently she studies primarily with Rebecca Lerner and Joan White.

She is past president of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Northwest and a past board member Photo of Pat in Padangushtasanaof the Iyengar Yoga Association of the U.S.

In 1991, about 8 months after having started yoga, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. At that point, yoga became more than a passing interest. It was instrumental to her survival during and after treatment. Though 20 years of teaching theatre, speech, and writing could have been enough of a feast in life, the chance to teach yoga is the perfect dessert.
